the number of girls in the class:
(1/4)(100-x) + 27
100 = x + (1/4)(100-x) + 27
solving for 'x' we have x=64
100-64 = 36
the class has 36 girls and 64 boys
(1/4)36 + (1/2)64 = 9 + 32 = 41
