Problema Solution
Mrs. Bollo's second grade class of thirty students conducted a pet ownership survey. Results of the survey indicate that 8 students own a cat, 15 students own a dog, and 5 students own both a cat and a dog. How many of the students surveyed own no cats?
Answer provided by our tutors
Of the 15 students that own a dog, 5 of them also own a cat. Therefore, the number of students that only own a dog is:
15-5=10 students
Furthermore, some students might not own a pet, so we need to subtract 10 and 8 from 30 to see how many students don't own a dog or cat:
30-10-8=12students
Therefore, the number of students that own no cats is equal to the number of students with only dogs and the number of students with no pet:
10+12=22 students
