Let 'x' be the age of Bill and 'y' the age of Jane.
Following the conditions we have
x = 3y
x + 7 = (y + 7)/2
Lets solve this system of 2 equations to find x and y.
3y + 7 = (y + 7) / 2
6y + 14 = y + 7
5 y = - 7
y = -7 / 5
Since y must be integer and positive number y = - 7/5 can not be the answer and the problem has no solution.
