Problema Solution
A friend of mine is in the nut business. I asked him to make me a 15lb mix of almonds and cashews for $100. If he sells me almonds for $6/lb and walnuts for $7.25/lb, how much of each will he put together for me?
Answer provided by our tutors
Let
x = weight of almonds in lbs by the price of $6/lb
y = weight of cashews in lbs by the price of $7.25/lb
x + y = 15 (15lb mix of almonds and cashew)
6*x + 7.25*y = 100 (price of almonds + price of cashews = money paid for the mix)
Lets solve the system of equation
x + y = 15
6*x + 7.25*y = 100
We find that
x = 7 lbs
y = 8 lbs
The $100 mix is made out of 7lbs of almonds and 8 lbs of cashews.
