A peacock is sitting on a pole whose length is 9 meters. There is a snake at a distance of 27 meters from the base of the pole. At what distance would the peacock catch the snake assuming that the speed of snake and peacock are the same.

t = the time that the peacock needs to fly the distance to the snake
d = vt the distance the peacock needs to fly to get to the snake
if the snake moves away from the pole then the peacock will never catch he
lets assume that the snake is moving towards the pole
by using the Pythagorean theorem we can write
9^2 + (27 - vt)^2 = (vt)^2 that is
81 + 729 - 54*d + d^2 = d^2
54*d = 810
d = 15 meters
The peacock will catch the snake at a distance of 15 meters.
