Problema Solution
A page of pictures for a yearbook is 8 inches wide and 11 1/2
inches tall. The top margin is
1/2
inch and the bottom margin is 5/4
inches. The space between each picture is at least 6/16
inch. How many 1.5-inch-tall pictures can fit in one column? Use a diagram to help you
solve the problem.
Answer provided by our tutors
TM = top margin
BM = bottom margin
x = number of pictures
TM + BM + (space b/w pics)+ (length of pics) = page length
1/2 + 5/4 + (6/16)*(x-1) + 1.5*x <= 11 1/2
1/2 + 5/4 + (6/16)*(x-1) + 1.5*x <= 23/2
by solving we find
x <= 5.4
this means that 5 pictures can fit in one column.
