Problema Solution

How much of a 50% alcohol solution should we mix with 10 gallons of a 35% solution to get a 40% solution?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = gallons of 50% alcohol solution

y = 10 gallons of 35% solution

by mixing x and y we get x + y gallons of a 40% solutions

0.5*x + 0.35*10 = 0.40*(x + 10)

by solving this equation we find

x = 5 gallons

we need 5 gallons of 50% alcohol solution.
