Problema Solution
1. Bob needs to take out a loan to purchase a boat. At one bank he would pay $1000 initially and $175 each month for the loan. At another bank he would pay %2500 initially and $100 each month for the loan. After how many months will the loan payments be the same?
2. The distance from Boston to LA is roughly 3000 miles if you drive 60 mph and only drive 9 hours per day. How many days will it take?
Answer provided by our tutors
1.
let x = the number of months we are looking for and
the loan payment in the first bank = the loan payment in the second bank
1000 + 175*x = 2500 + 100*x
75*x = 1500
x = 20 months
after 20 months the loan payments will be the same.
2.
let
d = 3000 miles the distance
v = 60 mph the speed
9 hours per day
t = the time spent in driving
since v = d/t => t = d/v
t = 3000/60
t = 50 hours
we drive only 9 hours per day so that means that we will need 50/9 days to make 3000 miles
50/9 = 5 5/9 days > 5 or approximately 6 days
this means that we will need 6 days to pass the distance.
