the total mixture is 250,000 this means
x + y = 250000
the value of x quarts + the value of y quarts = the value of 250,000 quarts
1.40 * x + 0.90 * y = 1.20 * 250000
by solving the system of equations
x + y = 250000
1.40 * x + 0.90 * y = 1.20 * 250000
we find
x = 150,000 quarts
y = 100,000 quarts
we need 150,000 quarts of $1.40 to produce new mid grade oil of 250,000 quarts worth $1.20 per quart.
