Problema Solution
A hundred ants are marching into an anthill at a slow, even pace of 2 miles per hour. Every ant is carrying either one crumb or two pieces of grass. There are 28 more bread crumbs than there are pieces of grass. How many of each are there?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
x = the total number of bread crumbs
y = the total number of pieces of grass
there are 28 more bread crumbs than there are pieces of grass
x = 28 + y
since every ant is carrying either one crumb or two pieces of grass the total number of ants will be
x + y/2 = 100
by solving the system of equations
x = 28 + y
x + y/2 = 100
we find
x = 76
y = 48
There are 76 bread crumbs and 48 pieces of grass.
