Problema Solution

Your school is adding a rectangular outdoor eating section along part of a 70 foot side of the school. The eating section will be enclosed by a fence along its three sides. The school has 120 feet of fencing and plans to use 1500 square feet of land for the eating section. What are the dimensions of the eating section?

Answer provided by our tutors

let the rectangular outdoor eating section has

x = length

y = width

and let x be the side that is not fences thus we have

x + 2y = 120

and x <= 70 ft

the area of the rectangular outdoor eating section is length*width that is

x * y = 1500

by solving the system of equations

x + 2y = 120

x * y = 1500

we find the following 2 solutions

solution 1:

x = 35.5 ft

y = 42.2 ft

solution 2:

x = 85.5 ft

y = 17.8 ft

the second solution is not the one we are looking for since we must have x < 70 and 85.5 > 70.

The dimensions of the eating section are 35.5 ft and 42.2 ft.
