In four plays a football team gains 3 yards then loses 7 and then loses 2 and gains 15 yards. How many yards did the team gain after four plays?

each loss or gain is assumed to constitute one play
a loss is expressed as a negative number, a gain is expressed as a positive number and then we add them all together:
3-7-2+15 = 18-9 = 9
after four plays, the team gained 9 yards, hopefully they had a "first and goal" from the 9! :)
