Problema Solution

A pool can be filled with two pipes in 6 hours. If the first pipe fills the pool in 24 hours, how long will it take for the second pipe to fill the pool?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = 24 hours the first pipe fills the pool alone

y = hours the second pipe fills the pool alone

together they need 6 hours

in 1 hour the first pipe will fill 1/24 parts of the pool

in 1 hour the second pipe will fill 1/y parts of the pool

in 1 hour both pipes together will fill 1/6 parts of the pool

1/24 + 1/y = 1/6

by solving we find

y = 8 hours

the second pipe needs 8 hours to fill the pool.
