Problema Solution

A car travelling at 24.4 meters per second is 110 meters behind a truck travelling at 20.8 meters per second. How far down the road, and in how much time will the car catch up to the truck?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v1 = 24.4 m/s the speed of the car

v2 = 20.8 m/s the speed of the truck

t = the time the car needs to catch up to the truck

do = 110 m the start distance between the car and the truck

since speed = distance traveled/ time => distance traveled = speed * time

v1*t = the distance that the car passed till the meeting point with the truck

v2*t = the distance that the truck made

the distance the car traveled = the beginning distance between the car and the truck + the distance traveled by the truck

v1*t = do + v2*t

24.4*t = 110 + 20.8*t

24.4.*t - 20.8*t = 110

3.6*t = 110

t = 110/3.6

t = 30.56 hours approximately

v1*t = 24.4*110/3.6 = 745.56 meters approximately

the car will catch up the truck in approximately 30.56 hours.

the distance that the car will pass is 745.56 meters approximately.
