Problema Solution

A chipmunk hid 3 acorns in each hole it dug. The squirrel hid 4 acorns in each hole it dug. They each hid the same number of acorns but the squirrel needed 4 fewer holes. How many acorns did the chipmunk hid?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = the number of holes that the chipmunk dug

since the squirrel needed 4 fewer holes this means that

x - 4 = the number of holes the squirrel dug

they each hid the same number of acorns

the number of acorns the chipmunk hid = the number of acorns the squirrel hid

3*x = 4*(x - 4)

3x = 4x - 16

x = 16 holes

the number of acorns the chipmunk hid is x*3 = 16*3 = 48

the chipmunk hid 48 acorns.
