Problema Solution

A family drove 1000 miles in 2 days of their vacation. if the distance driven on the second days was two-thirds the distance driven on the first, how far did they driven on each of the days?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = the distance driven of the first day in miles

y = the distance driven of the second day in miles

the family drove 1000 miles in 2 days

x + y = 1000

the distance driven on the second days was two-thirds the distance driven on the first

y = (2/3)*x

by solving the system of equations

y = (2/3)*x

x + y = 1000

we find

x = 600 miles

y = 400 miles.

on the first day they drove 600 miles.

on the second day they drove 400 miles.
