Problema Solution

Jason and Tyler both live 13 miles from school. If one drives at 37 miles per hour and one at 52 miiles per hour what is their time difference

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v1 = 37 mph the average speed of Jason

v2 = 52 mph the avergae speed of Tyler

t1 = the time Jason travels

t2 = the time Tyler travels

d = 13 miles the distance they both pass

we need to find the time difference that is t1 - t2

the average speed = distance / time => time = distance / avg. speed thus we have

t1 = d/v1

t2 = d/v2

t1 - t2 = d/v1 - d/v2 = d(1/v1 - 1/v2) = 13(1/37 - 1/52)

t1 - t2 = 195/1924 hours = 195*60/1924 min = 6 min 5 sec

their time difference is 6 minutes and 5 seconds.
