Grandma was planning to make a red, white, and blue quilt. One-third was to be red and two-fifths was to be white. If the area of the quilt was to be 30 square feet, how many square feet would be blue?

we will assume that the shape of the quilt is a square with area A = 30 ft^2
let
r = the area of red
w = the are of white
b = the area of blue
one-third was to be red
r = A/3 = 30/3 = 10 ft^2
two-fifths was to be white
w = 2A/5 = 2*30/5 = 12 ft^2
the total area is A = r + b + w
r +b + w = 30 => b = 30 - (r + w)
b = 30 - (10 + 12) = 8 ft^2
b = 8 ft^2
the blue would be 8 ft^2.
