Problema Solution
Matt and his brother mixed together two types of soil to make 10ft^3 with a 47% sand content. They used 9ft^3 of a soil with 50% and sand content and 1ft^3 of another type of soil. What was the sand content of the second type of soil?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
x be the content of sand in the 1 ft^3 type of soil
Matt and his brother mixed together two types of soil to make 10ft^3
9 + x = 10
the 50% sand content of the 9ft^3 + the x sand content of the 1ft^3 soild = 47% sand content in the 10 ft^3 mix
(50/100)*9 + x*1 = (47/100)*10
0.50*9 + x = 0.47*10
by solving the equation we find
x = 0.2 or this means 0.2*100 = 20% of sand
