Problema Solution
Using a single hose Janet can fill a pool in 6 hours. The same pool can be drained in 8 hours by opening a drain pipe. If Janet forgets to close the drainpipe how long will it take her to fill the pool?
Answer provided by our tutors
the rate of the single hose is 1 pool in 6 hours that is 1/6 pools per hour
the rate of the draining pipe is 1 pool in 8 hours that is 1/8 pools per hour
let x be the hours needed for the pool to fill up when the drainpipe is open then the rate will be 1 pool in x hours that is 1/x pools per hour
since the hose is running and the drain pipe is open we have the following equation
1/6 - 1/8 = 1/x
by solving the equation we find
x = 24 hours

if the drainpipe is open it takes 24 hours to fill the pool .
