Problema Solution
A pipe can fill a swimming pool in 10 hours. If the second pipe is open, the two pipes together can fill the pool in 4 hours.how long would it take the second pipe alone to fill the pool?
Answer provided by our tutors
First pipe can fill a swimming pool in 10 hours thus the rate of the first pipe is 1 pool in 10 hour that is 1/10 pools/hour
Second pipe can fill a swimming pool in x hours thus the rate of the second pipe is 1 pool in y hours that is 1/x pools/hour
the two pipes together fill the swimming pool in 4 hours thus their rate is 1 pool in 4 hours or 1/4 pools/hour
the rate of the first pipe + the rate of the second pipe = the rate of the 2 pipes together
1/10 + 1/x = 1/4
by solving the equation we find
x = 20/3 hours

x = 6 hours 2*60/3 min
x = 6 hours 40 min
the second pipe needs 6 hours 40 min to fill the swimming pool alone.
