Problema Solution

the slope of a line is perpendicular to the line through (-3,2) and (x,2) is (-7/4) find the value of x ?

Answer provided by our tutors

the slope of a line through (-3,2) and (x,2) is

m1 = (2 -2)/(x - (-3)) = 0

notice that this line is parallel to x-axis

the slope of the line perpendicular to the above m2 is given by

m2 = -1/m1 since these slopes are negative reciprocals

also the perpendicular line is parallel to y-axis and its slope is undefined thus it can not be (-7/4) as stated in the text of the problem.

this is a contradiction and the problem has no solutions.
