Problema Solution

A 10% solution of fertilizer is to be mixed with a 70% solution of fertilizer in order to get 120 gallons of a 50% solution. How many gallons of the 10% solution and 70% and 70% solution should be mixed?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = gallons of 10% solution of fertilizer

y = gallons of 70% solution of fertilizer

we need to get 120 gallons of a 50% solution

x + y = 120

the % of fertilizer x + the % of fertilizer in y = 50% of 120 gallons of fertilizer

0.10x + 0.70y = 0.50*120

by solving the system of equations

x + y = 120

0.10x + 0.70y = 0.50*120

we find

x = 40 ml

y = 80 ml
