Problema Solution
A cable car can hold at most 42 adults OR 40 adults and 18 children. If only children are present, what is the maximum amount of children allowed in the cable car?
Answer provided by our tutors
42 adults is equivalent to 40 adults and 18 children
since 42 - 40 = 2 adults thus 18 children take the space of 2 adults
let x be the maximum number of children allowed in the cable car and x in integer
42 adults to x children = 40 adults to 18 children
42 : x = 40 : 18
by solving the equation we find
x = 18.9 and since the number of children is integer the biggest integer smaller then 18.9 is 18
18 children is the maximum number of children allowed in the cable car
