Problema Solution

During a road trip, Eve stopped at two rest stops. In the parking lot of the first rest stop, she counted 24 cars and 15 trucks. At the second rest stop, she counted 34 cars and 24 trucks. At which rest stop did Eve count a higher ratio of cars to trucks?

Answer provided by our tutors

First rest stop ratio of cars to trucks:

24/15 = (3*8)/(3*5) = 8/5

Second rest stop ratio of cars to trucks:

34/24 = (2*17)/(2*12) = 17/12

we need to compare 8/5 and 17/12

Greatest Common Factor of 5 and 12 is 60

8/5 = (8*12)/(5*12) = 96/60

17/12 = (17*5)/(12*5) = 85/60

since 96/60 > 85/60 we conclude that 8/5 > 17/12 thus the first rest stop has a higher ratio of cars to trucks.
