Problema Solution

Write two equations for each problem and solve by substitution.

Evan and June together owe their father $42.50. The amount June owes is11.90 less than three times the amount Evan owes. How much money does each owe?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

e = the money that Evan owes to his father

j = the money that June owes to his father

Evan and June together owe their father $42.50 or this can be written as

e + j = 42.50

The amount June owes is 11.90 less than three times the amount Evan owes

j = 3e - 11.90

now have the following system of equations

e + j = 42.50

j = 3e - 11.90

The idea here is to solve one of the equations for one of the variables, and plug this into the other equation.

We plug j = 3e - 11.90 into e + j = 42.50 and have

e + (3e - 11.90) = 42.50

by solving we find

e = $13.6

j = 3*e - 11.90

j = 3*13.6 - 11.90

j = $28.9
