Problema Solution

A car passes a landmark on a highway traveling at a constant rate of 50 kilometers per hour. One hour later, a second car passes the same landmark traveling in the same direction at 66 kilometers per hour. How much time after the second car passes the landmark will it overtake the first car?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v1 = 50 km/h the speed of the first car

v2 = 66 km/h the speed of the second car

t = the time of the travel of the first car

t - 1 = the time of the travel of the second car (one hour later)

since speed = distance/time => distance = speed*time

at the moment the second car overtakes the first the distances that each of the cars made will be the same that is

v1*t = v2(t - 1)

50t = 66(t - 1)

by solving we find

t = 4.125 h = 4 h 0.125*60 min = 4 h 7 min 0.5*60 s = 4 h 7 min 30 s

we need the time of the second car that is t - 1

4 h 7 min 30 s - 1 h = 3 h 7 min 30 s

After 3 hours 7 min 30 seconds the second car will overtake the first car.
