Make a good drawing.
Let the distance when Abbey started walking to Laurens home be: x km
Abbey walked 3 km west and the house is to the east thus the distance after the 3 km west will be: x + 3
Then she walked twice as far going east that is 2*3 = 6 km going east thus the distance will reduce by 6 km: x + 3 - 6 = x - 3
She continued east for another kilometre, stopping 2 km east of Laurens home: x - 3 - 1 = 2
by solving we find
x - 4 = 2
x = 2 + 4
x = 6 km
When Abby started walking, she was 6 km from Laurens home.
