Problema Solution

Two factory plants are making TV panels. Yesterday, Plant A produced 8000 fewer panels than Plant B did. Two percent of the panels from Plant A and 4% of the panels from Plant B were defective. How many panels did Plant A produce, if the two plants together produced 920 defective panels?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

a = the number of panels that Plant A produced

b = the number of panels that Plant B produced

Plant A produced 8000 fewer panels than Plant B:

a = b - 8000

2% of the panels from Plant A and 4% of the panels from Plant B were defective and the two plants together produced 920 defective panels:

0.02a + 0.04b = 920

We have the following system of equations:

a = b - 8000

0.02a + 0.04b = 920

........

a = 10,000 panels

b = 18,000 panels

Plant A produced 10,000 panels.
