for 2.5 hours together they will finish
2.5(1/10) + 2.5(1/8) = 1/4 + 1.25/4 = 2.25/4 = 9/16
for 2.5 hours together they will finish 9/16 of the job.
for h hours they will finish
h(1/10) + h(1/8) = h(1/10 + 1/8) = h((4 + 5)/40) = (9h/40) of the job.
