The hare started at the 16 for line and ran down the starting line at a rate 2 ft/s. The tortoise started at the 1 foot line and ran up toward the finish line at a rate of 1/2 ft/s. At what time will they meet? How far from the starting line will they be.

y = -2x + 16
the equation of the tortoise is
y = -0.5x + 15

by solving the system
y = -2x + 16
y = -0.5x + 15
we find
x = 0.67 s
y = 14.67 ft
after 0.67 second they will be 14.67 ft far from the finish line or 16 - 14.67 = 1.33 ft from the start line.
