Problema Solution
SOLUTION: Can the measures of the sides of a triangle be in the ratio 2 : 3 : 7? Explain why or why not.
Answer provided by our tutors
the triangle inequality states that for any triangle, the sum of the lengths of any two sides must be greater than the length of the remaining side
if the sides of the triangle are a, b and c such that a : b : c = 2 : 3 : 7 we can write
a = 2k
b = 3k
c = 7k
where k is non-negative number
the sum of a and b is not greater then c that is
2k + 3k = 5k < 7k = c
thus a, b and c can not be sides of a triangle.
