Problema Solution

Find the sum of the areas of the two rectangles. Write your answer in factored form.

Rectangle 1 has a length of 1 divide by x-1 and a width of x-2

Rectangle 2 has a length of 2 divided by x+1 and a width of x

Answer provided by our tutors

rectangle 1 area = [1/(x-1)](x-2) = x-2/x-1

rectangle 2 area = [2/x+1](x) = 2x/x+1

sum of area = x-2/x-1 + 2x/x+1

                  = (x-2) (x+1)+(2x)(x-1)/x^2-1

= x^2+x-2x-2+2x^2-2x/x^2-1

=3x^2-3x-2/x^2-1
