Problema Solution

There are two copy machines that make copies of photographs. One is newer than the other. Working together, both machines take 6 hours to make copies of all the photographs. However, working alone, the older copy machine takes 5 hours longer than the newer copy machine. If the newer copy machine was working alone, how long would it take to make copies of the photographs?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

n = the hours the new machine needs to make the copies, n>0

n + 5 = the hours the older machine needs to make the copies

the rate of the newer machine + the rate of the older machine = the together rate

1/n + 1/(n + 5) = 1/6

by solving we find

n = 10 hr
