Problema Solution

Train A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. Train A is traveling at 60 miles per hour and train B is traveling at 80 miles per hour Train A passes A station at 1:15 pm if train B passes the same station at 1:27 at what time will B catch up to A?

Answer provided by our tutors

Train A has a lead of (1:27 - 1:15) = 12 minutes = (12/60) hours over train B.

In these 12 minutes, it would have built a lead of 60 * (12/60) = 12 miles.

Relative speed of the trains = (80 - 60) mph = 20 mph

So, the lead of 12 miles can be covered in 12/20 hours = 12/20 * 60 minutes = 36 minutes

So, train B catches up to train A 36 minutes after 1:27, that is at 2:03
