Problema Solution
A cyclist rode the first 26 mile portion of his workout at a constant speed. For the 22 mile cooldown portion of his workout, he reduced his speed by 2 miles per hour. Each portion of the workout took the same time. Find the cyclists speed during the first portion and find his speed during the cooldown portion.
Answer provided by our tutors
Speed at 26 mile portion = v mph
Speed at 22 miles portion = v - 2 mph
distance / speed = time
Since each portion of the workout took the same time we have
26/v = 2/(v-2)
by solving we find
v =13 mph

Speed during first portion = 13 mph.
Speed during second portion = 13 - 2 = 11 mph.
