Problema Solution
A student on her way to a spring break vacation drove from her home to the airport at an average speed of 40
mph. The student spent a total of 60 minutes at the airport before her airplane lifted off for Ft. Lauderdale.
The airplane flew from her airport to Ft. Lauderdale at an average speed of 440 mph. The entire distance
was 1360 miles; the entire trip took four hours. Find the distance from the airport to the student’s home to the
nearest mile.
Answer provided by our tutors
let
d = the distance from the airport to the student’s home
since time = distance/speed
d/40 = the time of the trip from her home to the airport
60 min = 1 hr waiting
(1360 - d)/540 = the time of the flight (we will assume that the average speed of the plane is 540 mph instead of 440 mph - otherwise we get a negative value for the distance)
d/40 + 1 + (1360 - d)/540 = 4
by solving we find
d = 20.8 mi
