Problema Solution

A page for a magazine contains 70 square inches of type. The length for a page is twice the width. If the margin around the page is two inches uniformly, what are the dimensions of a page?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

l = the length of the page, l>0

w = the width of the page, w>0

m = 2 in the margin of the page

the magazine contains 70 in^2 type that is

(l - 2*2)*(w - 2*2) = 70

(l - 4)*(w - 4) = 70

the length for a page is twice the width

l = 2w

plug l = 2w into (l - 4)*(w - 4) = 70 we get

(2w - 4)*(w - 4) = 70

by solving we find

w = 9 in

l = 2*9

l = 18 in

the dimensions of the page are: the length is 18 inches and the width is 9 inches.
