Problema Solution
Leslie set up a fruit stand to sell some of her crop of oranges. The first person who came by bought 1/3 of her oranges. The second person bought 4 oranges. The third person then bought ΒΌ of the remaining oranges. Leslie took the last 15 oranges home and made orange juice. How many oranges did Leslie have at the beginning?
Answer provided by our tutors
let x = the number of oranges Leslie had at the beginning
the first person bought: (1/3)x oranges
the second person bought: 4 oranges
the third person bought 1/4 of the remaining oranges: (1/4)(x - ((1/3)x + 4))
15 oranges are left
if add all the oranges together we get x:
(1/3)x + 4 + (1/4)(x - ((1/3)x + 4)) + 15 = x
by solving we find
x = 36 oranges
