Problema Solution

The perimeter of a rectangle is 19 ft. The areas is 15 sq. feet. What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

l = the length of the rectangle, l>0

w = the width of the rectangle, w>0

The perimeter of a rectangle is 19 ft

2(l + w) = 19 divide both sides by 2

l + w = 9.5

l = 9.5 - w

The areas is 15 sq. feet

l*w = 15

plug l = 9.5 - w into the last equation:

(9.5 - w)*w = 15

by solving we find

w1 = 2 ft

w2 = 7.5

l = 9.5 - 2

l = 7.5 ft

one solution for the dimensions is: the length is 7.5 feet and the width is 2 feet.

for w = 7.5 we find l = 9.5 - 7.5 = 2 ft but we also assume that the length is bigger then the width and in this case this condition is not satisfied.
