Problema Solution

Two buses leave a station at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus travels 20km/h slower than the other. If the two buses are 1750 km apart after 7 hours, what is the rate of each bus?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v = the rate of slower bus

v + 20 = the rate of the faster bus

t = 7 hours

since distance = rate*time and the travel in opposite direction we have:

v*t + (v + 20)*t = 1750

7v + (v + 20)*7 = 1750

by solving we find

v = 115 km/h

v + 20 = 115 + 20 = 135 km/h

the rate of the faster bus is 135 km/h.

the rate of the slower bus is 115 km/h.
