Problema Solution
On December 26,2004, an earthquake generated tsunamis off the coast of the island of Sumatra. One tsunami struck Patong Beach in Thailand, which was about 250 miles away from the epicenter (or starting point) of the tsunami. Another tsunami struck Batticaloa in Sri Lanka, which was about 900 miles away from the epicenter. Both Batticaloa and Patong were struck at about the same time. If the rate of the tsunami which struck Batticaloa was 325 mph greater than that of the tsunami which struck Patong, find the rates of both tsunamis. Give a check of your answer.
Answer provided by our tutors
let the rate be x for patong
so baticaloa rate = 325+x
so
we know time = distance/rate
time is nearly same for both patong and baticaloa
(250/x)=(900/325+x)
900x-250x= 250*325
x=250*325/650
x=125 mph
so rate of patong = 125 mph
rate of baticaloa = 325+125 = 450 mph
check
time take for patong = 250/125 =2 hr
time taken to reach baticaloa = 900/450 = 2 hr
so same need , hence correct
