Problema Solution

The relation give by the ordered pairs (-5,-2) (5,4) (3,2) (2,-5) and (0,5) is a function

A) choose an ordered pair that can be included with this relation to form a new relation that is also a function why is this new relation a function?

B) chose and ordered pair that when if added to the previous relation would form a new relation that is not a function why is this new relation not a function?

Answer provided by our tutors

a function is a one-to-one mapping from the domain to the range;

the domain of the given relation is:

{-5,5,3,2,0}

the range of the given relation is:

{-2,4,2,-5,5}

the ordered pair (-6,-5) could be added to the relation and still be a function because -6 is not in the original domain and the relation then maps -6 to only one value, -5

the ordered pair (-5,-6), if added to the relation, would create a relation that is not a function since -5 already exists in the original domain and is already mapped to -2, therefore the new relation maps -5 to both -2 and -6 and it is not a function
