Problema Solution
Speedster drove his winged scooter 240 miles at a certain speed. If he had traveled 15 mph faster, he would have been able to travel 30 miles further in 3/4 of the time that he had spent on the trip. What was speedster's rate on the trip?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
v = speedster's rate on the trip
t = the time of the trip
d = 240 mi the distance traveled
since distance = time*speed we have
v*t = d
vt = 240
t = 240/v
If he had traveled 15 mph faster, he would have been able to travel 30 miles further in 3/4 of the time that he had spent on the trip:
(v + 15)(3/4)t = d + 30
(v + 15)(3/4)t = 240 + 30
(v + 15)(3/4)t = 270
plug t = 240/v into the last equation:
(v + 15)(3/4)(240/v) = 270
by solving we find:
v = 30 mph
