Problema Solution

In the morning, May drove to an appointment at 50 mph. Her average speed on the return trip in the afternoon was 40 mph. The return trip took hour longer. How far did she travel to the appointment?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v1 = 50 mph the avg. speed on the way to the appointment

t1 = the time of the trip to the appointment

v2 = 40 mph the avg. speed on the return trip

t2 = the time of the trip back

d = distance of the trip

since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed

t1 = d/v1

t2 = d/v2

The return trip took hour longer:

t2 = t1 + 1

plug t1 = d/v1 and t2 = d/v2 into the last equation:

d/v2 = d/v1 + 1

d/40 = d/50 + 1

by solving we find:

d = 200 mi
