Solution:

a) We assume there are x women, so (x-280) children and x/3 men

So the equation is

(x-280)/(x + x/3) = 1/6

x = 360

So women: 360

b)Men: 120, children: 80, women: 360

We assume x men left

So 120-x = 0.12*(120+360+80-x)

x = 60

So 60 men left
