Problema Solution

Jason left Detroit, and 3 hours later, Dan left going 89 mph faster to catch up. After 2 hours, Dan caught up. Find Jason's average speed.

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v1 = Jason's average speed

t1 = the time of the travel of Jason

v2 = 89 mph Dan's average speed

t2 = 2 hr the time of Dan's travel

Since Dan left 3 hours later we have

t1 = t2 + 3

t1 = 2 + 3

t1 = 5 hr

since they both traveled the same distance and distance = speed*time we have:

v1*t1 = v2*t2

v1*5 = 89*2

by solving we find:

v1 = 35.6 mph
