Problema Solution

You are building deck off the back of your house. one part of the deck is rectangle, 8 feet wide by 10 inches long. Another part forms a right triangle, with side lengths of 8 feet, 15 feet, and 17 feet. You are using 2 by 6's for the floor deck. ( A 2 by 6is a plank of wood that is six inches wide). The 2 by 6's are each 12 feet long and will be cut to fit as needed so that no wood is wasted until the last piece. how many will you need to build the deck?

1 ft = 12 in

the area of the deck is:

8*12*10 = 960 in^2 (8 ft = 8*12 in)

the area of the right triangle is:

8*15 = 120 ft^2 = 120*12*12 in^2 (1 ft^2 = 12*12 in^2)

the area of the 2 by 6's a planks is:

6*12*12 in^2 (12 ft = 12*12 in)

to find the number of planks we divide the total area of the deck by the are of the plank

(960 + 120*12*12)/(6*12*12) = 21.11

thus you will need 22 planks to build the deck.
