Problema Solution

The Peterson's set aside $500 to donate to their three favorite charities: the children's home, the food bank, and the animal shelter. They gave twice as much to the food bank as to the animal shelter. Their donation to the children's home was $50 more than the donation to the food bank. How much did each charity receive from the Peterson's?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = the money donated to the children's home

y = the money donated to the food bank

z = the money donated to the animal shelter

The Peterson's set aside $500 to donate to their three favorite charities: the children's home, the food bank, and the animal shelter:

x + y + z = 500

They gave twice as much to the food bank as to the animal shelter:

y = 2z

Their donation to the children's home was $50 more than the donation to the food bank:

x = 50 + y

by solving the system of equations:

x + y + z = 500

y = 2z

x = 50 + y

we find:

x = $230

y = $180

z = $90
