a waiter has a three pint glass and a five pint glass. a customer walks in and orders four pints of soda. without a measuring cup but with an unlimited supply of soda how does he get one pint in either glass?

we have
small glass = 3 pint glass
big glass = 5 pint glass
we want to get 1 pint
fill up the 3 pint glass
pour the 3 pints into the 5 pint glass = there is space for another 5 - 3 = 2 pints in the big glass
fill up again the 3 pint glass and pour its content into the big glass
since there is room for another 2 pints in the big glass what is left in the small glass is 3-2 = 1 pint.
